DR. Yam Talks Social Media Management

I first met Dr. Yam when were both participating in a 15-day Video Challenge with my favorite video expert, Lou Bortone. The idea was for each of us to make one video a day for 15 days and experiment with different technologies. It was immediately clear that Yamilette Kirkwood Williams, aka Dr. Yam, enjoyed working with the tech and, unlike many of us in that challenge, was not at all intimidated by it.

After following her online for a while, I realized she’d be a terrific person to interview, especially because she’s developing and will soon launch a new desktop app for managing social media. She’s shown a commitment to making social media easier for the rest of us!

A few excerpts from our conversation, Sept. 28, 2021

Understanding that many people who are considering leaving a lifetime of working for someone else to start a new business may not realize how many skills, work ways and perspectives they already have in place that will come in handy in their own enterprises, I asked Dr. Yam to comment on her own journey from being a high-level education administrator and leader to having an online coaching business, which she named Keep It Simple Coach.

Excerpts from her reply:

“Some of my pre-skills go back to my father, as an entrepreneur himself… He was a craftsman, he owned his own jewelry store..and his parents – they were in real estate… so I’ve gotten that entrepreneurial gene.

My love for teaching was also a part of that ability to share knowledge and empower others to do their best, (to bring) out the best in themselves.

As part of being a practitioner in education, a lot of coaching philosophies are brought into our world to help us to become better as teachers…those skillsets of coaching and bridging them together: coaching, education and business, and leadership… has allowed me to cultivate that ability to leave where I was as an administrator and starting off on my own as a consultant, freelancer, solopreneur, and as a coach.”

I wanted to know more about how Dr. Yam went from social media user to social media inventor. Soon her social media management platform, SOCIAL BALANCE, will be launched to the world (I for one plan to give it a try). Embarking on such an ambitious project takes a lot of technical knowledge and chutzpah. I admire her. I asked her to talk about what led her to the decision to become a technology innovator.

Excerpts from her reply:

I have a knack for taking complex matters and simplifying them…I find it quite easy to take a complex concept and drill it down, just simplify it so it doesn’t become arduous and hard. It’s been a gift for me and I try to use it to help others.

“The ability to have that presence, that voice online, as a new business owner, can be very overwhelming. You’re a one-woman/man show, and there are a lot of moving parts and you’re gonna wear a lot of hats at the beginning and you’re not gonna wear them well!  You’re not gonna be cute!

There are at least 7 social media platforms… and typically what happens is you’re jumping in and out of these spaces (managing) all those moving parts. You’re creating your content that’s gonna go out into all of those different venues in order to be in front of all the intended audiences that you have.

So, how can you manage this better…?

A social media management (tool) such as SOCIAL BALANCE is (a place where we’ve) centralized all the components, where you can facilitate the management of your social media content — (including your) ability to Create, to Publish, and to Monitor that content.”

………..

Thank you Dr. Yam!
