Website Planning

Website Planning and Copywriting Assistance

You want to upgrade your website, or create a new one from scratch.

This can be daunting.

You know how much you can help people with your work, but you’re not sure of the best way to talk about it.

You may not be entirely certain about what matters most to your ideal customers — a matter that must be crystal clear before you create or renovate a website.

There are many decisions to make and they’re all intertwined:

  • What do I say on the Home Page?
  • Who am I talking to, what do they care about, and how does that affect the words I use?
  • Do I have a helpful set of offers to promote on my pages? Should I sell these offers from my website?
  • What kinds of photos and brand elements will resonate with the people I hope to serve?
  • What do I tell people about myself?
  • How can I help people see that I know what I’m talking about so they can trust me?

You’re in charge of the decisions, but we can make the process easier, give you feedback on your ideas, help push you over the finish line — AND help you gain momentum for launching your new site when it’s completed!

Examples of Web Planning, Copywriting, and Marketing Research Projects for Clients

We also collaborated on the development of three distinct Giveaway documents (I did the final copywriting, the design work, and wrote copy for her landing pages). Most recently, I put an email autoresponder series in place to accompany each of her Giveaways:

  1. Before You Call a Grantwriter for Your New Project: Answer These 9 Essential Questions to be “Grant Ready”
  2. Curating for Diversity: Your Checklist for Creating a Performance for a Conference, Retreat or Public Function
  3. Getting the Board on Board: 7 Key Responsibilities of Nonprofit Board Members

Denise Pate Consulting

Denise Pate (an accomplished nonprofit arts consultant from the San Francisco Bay area) and I worked together to develop her understanding of ideal clients and primary services — then we created copy together and chose images for her first professional website.

This was a joint project in collaboration with my favorite website designer, Marj Esch.

Denise and I go waayyy back — each of us worked, many years ago, at a cutting-edge multi-disciplinary arts organization in Oakland, Everybody’s Creative Arts Center/CitiDance.  Thank you, Denise!

What a pleasure it was to work with over 50 faculty members, advisors, students, deans and marketing staff to develop this new and in-depth understanding of Kirtland’s student body. It’s a wonderful school: I discovered that all the faculty and staff genuinely care about their students, and that made the project very enjoyable.

Thank you for including me Marj and Dr. Quinn.

Kirtland Community College

AVATAR and Website Copywriting Project 2021-22

My favorite web designer, Marj Esch, is (among other things), the webmaster for an award-winning community college in Michigan: Kirtland Community College. In 2021, she and Kirtland’s President, Dr. Tom Quinn, asked me to join them in designing an internal research project to gather in-depth information about the typical students for each of 23 different college programs. (this project is described in greater detail here…)

After gathering the information about each Avatar, the next step was to rewrite the website and on-demand brochure copy for all 23 programs. Here’s a sample of my work from that project:

Beth Dean Music

Beth Dean and I worked together to develop the copy, concepts, and products for her site. I supported her decision-making process in choosing a logo and brand elements, videos and images for her new website. After its completion, I helped Beth launch her new site and products and worked with her staff on their ongoing plan for email marketing and outreach.

This was a joint project in collaboration with my favorite website builder, Marj Esch.

Beth is such a talented artist, teacher, songwriter — and a savvy businesswoman — what a pleasure to work together! Thank you, Beth!

Harmony in Schools

Marykay Howard and I worked together for nearly a year to transform the very successful stress management courses she’d been teaching in a high school environment into a business and website. We co-developed the language, sections and pages needed for her website, and then turned it over to her web builder.

Marykay’s work saves lives. It was important that her website convey the gravity of the problems she’s solving, as well as the efficacy of her methods (as evidenced by student responses — her class was eventually the most popular elective in a school of nearly 2,400). Now she’s enjoying incredible success — so well deserved.

Thank you, Marykay!

Katie Bull and Whole Body Voice

I worked with the inspiring jazz singer, environmental activist and vocal coach Katie Bull, to develop descriptions for the 3 types of clients she serves for use on her website and in a print brochure: Performers & Speakers, Activists and Earth Lovers, and Helping Professionals.

Writing a brief narrative to attract these three types of clients was our emphasis, a means of describing how Katie’s vocal coaching can bring out the best in each, making them more effective in their chosen vocations or avocations.

Katie is based in New York and is the Head of Vocal Production for the Atlantic Studio at NYU/Tisch. She also has a private practice where she coaches individuals and presents workshops.

Thank you, Katie!

Rimroc Farm

This work had to happen FAST! Due to a serious hacking from someone in Singapore, Rimroc Farm lost their website completely, and we needed to put it back together with a few improvements ASAP! We worked together to choose images and developed a very brief narrative to describe the work of training racehorses. The emphasis on this site is visual storytelling!

It’s always a pleasure to work with these Lexington-based friends in the horse industry — they combine such a high degree of respect for horses with over 40 years of experience. . Thank you Bill and Beth Wofford!
